Benjamin's Story

Benjamin Robert McPherson, Beloved Father and Friend, 85, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017.
Ben was born June 9, 1931, in Ravenna, to Walter Linton and Edna Merrill Wilson McPherson. Ben was a retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel and veteran pilot and flight commander of the Vietnam era, having served in 95 combat missions. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky. Ben was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and other awards while serving. He was a retired insurance agent and realtor. Ben was an active and devout member of First Baptist Church, Richmond, for 50 years. He also served as a member and in leadership positions for many civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club and Madison County Republicans.
Ben loved the Lord, UK Basketball and golf. Ben was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Redden McPherson, and daughter, Joan Gail McPherson. Survivors include: his son, Walter Robert McPherson of Columbia, South Carolina, Margaret Lisa "Peggy" Wells (John), of Winchester, Ann Lillian Pivonka (Al) of Avon, Indiana, Sara Beth Valenzuela (Rick) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and wife, Mildred Ray McPherson, and five grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters, Margaret J. Patterson and Dotty D. Greene of Birmingham, Ala.
Service will be held Monday, April 3, 2017, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Richmond. Visitation will be Sunday, April 2, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice Care Plus of Berea, KY (www.hospicecareplus.org).
