Dr. Betty C. Powers, 84, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.
Born on July 24, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Glyndon Lloyd and Lola Mary Abney Click. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Powers.
Dr. Betty Powers holds a B.S. degree in Vocational Home Economics from Berea College, a M.S. in Home Economics Education from the University of Kentucky and an Ed.D. in Vocational Education from the University of Kentucky. She has served as a Home Economics Extension Agent in Johnson County a Vocational Home Economics Teacher at Johnson Central High School in Paintsville. She was a Supervising Teacher at the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Vocational-Technical Education at the University of Tennessee. She was head of Home Economics Education in the Department of Vocational Education at the University of Kentucky. She also has served as Associate Professor, Professor and Chair of the Department of Home Economics at Eastern Kentucky University. She was a member of the White Oak Pond Christian Church where she was active in the Bartholomew group, the Choir, Disciples Women and served as an Elder. She was also active in The Richmond Choral Society, the D.A.R., KRTA, Berea Progress Club, Meals on Wheels and Habitat Selection Committee.
Survivors include: one son, James G. and Debra Powers of Richmond; one daughter, Carol Powers Elkin of Berea; one brother, Dr. C. Glen and Karon Click; four grandchildren, Jerry and Amanda Mullins, Jayme and Jacob Curry, James Garrett Powers and Brennan Claire Powers; seven great-grandchildren, Hayes, Kinsley, Taylor Nicole, Mason, Shelby, Taylor and Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Jean Click Kelly.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the White Oak Pond Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Rev. Chad Snellgrove and Rev. Dr. Russell Rechenbach officiating the services. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home and also from 10 a.m. until service time. Saturday at the White Oak Pond Christian Church.
Pallbearers will be Sean Click, Jerry David Mullins, Garrett Powers, Gary Taylor, Jacob Curry, Brandon Staggs and Jason McKinney.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Jaymie Curry and Brennan Claire Powers.
