Dorothy (Dottie) Thomas Stipes, age 81, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Dottie was born June 28, 1935, in Owensboro, Ky., and lived nearly her entire life in Richmond, Ky. She lived briefly in both St. Louis, Mo., and Madison, Wis.
Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, Bert Thomas Sr. and Dorothy Thomas. Her husband John Stipes Jr. passed away in 2000.
Survivors include her four sons: David Stipes (Harriet), Tom Stipes (Randi), Doug Stipes and Patrick Stipes (Sonja), along with granddaughters Andrea Stipes and Marisa Stipes and grandsons Brenden Stipes, Dillon Stipes and Alex Meadows.
Additionally, she is survived by five siblings: Martha Dumas (Dale), Bob Thomas (Victoria), Pat Thomas (Kathy), Bert Thomas Jr. (preceded in death by Mary Ellen) and Peggy Dunagan (Daryl). Also surviving is a special aunt, Katherine Lenihan, of Mayfield, Ky., as well as many nieces and nephews around the country.
Special acknowledgments go out to her lifelong friends, "The Birthday Group," as well as her special group of friends at St. Mark Church and others in her many fellowship associations.
Dottie attended Webster College in St. Louis and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. degree. Her life was spent raising four sons and working in the family business, Thomas Furniture Co. Later, she continued her career with both Eastern Kentucky University and the city of Richmond.
Dottie Stipes was a member of St. Mark Church Catholic Church during her entire life in Richmond. She gave generously of her time and talents for decades to her church, as well as to many service minded endeavors throughout the community.
In recent years, she was active with Richmond Home Meals Delivery (serving on the board and as an active contributor), the Baptist Health Richmond gift shop and other charitable and service organizations. Dottie was a tireless and compassionate volunteer and will be missed by many as a trusted and loyal friend.
She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority, The Altar Society at St. Mark and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed playing golf as well as watching sports in person and on television, especially her UK Wildcats and the PGA Tour.
The funeral visitation and funeral mass will both be held at St. Mark Church in Richmond. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral mass is scheduled for Thursday, January 19, at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in the Richmond Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are: David Montgomery, Edd Woods, Ryan Dunagan, Doug Justice, Pat Reister and Bert Thomas III. Honorary pallbearers are: Glenmore Jones, Ron Coffman, David Shew, Brenden Stipes, Alex Meadows and Chuck Gibson.
Funeral arrangements have been made with the Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home in Richmond, Kentucky.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor at either the Richmond Home Meals Delivery program (325 University Dr., Richmond, KY 40475) or the St. Mark Catholic Church General Fund (608 W. Main St., Richmond, KY 40475).
