James Lawrence Ponziano, 83, passed away on February 20 at Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.
James was born on April 21, 1933. He was raised in the Grand Crossing area of Chicago, Ill., and attended Hirsch High School. In later years, he moved to Crown Point, Ind., where he was a successful General Contractor for more than 40 years. He was also a Real Estate Broker, a member of the Italian Sons and Daughters of American, Cesare Batiste Lodge No. 27, in Schererville, Ind., a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2529, in Cedar Lake, Ind., and an army veteran. He enjoyed cooking, baking, entertaining, gardening, music and travel. He was an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge. James retired in 2015 and moved to the Baldwin area of Richmond.
He is survived by: his wife, Rochelle (Zalewski); five sons, Donald, Lawrence, Marty, James and Thomas; five daughters, Cathy, Janice, Linda, Yvonne and Lisa; 24 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends; his in-laws, Lori and Bill Winter of Richmond, and their daughters, Morgan and Shelby.
The family has selected private services. James will be interred at St. Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen Park, Ill., and Memorial Services in Indiana are pending.
The Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, W. Main St., Richmond, is in charge of the arrangements.
