Dr. Jay Riggs, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 29, 2016. He was born, Sept. 3, 1942, in Dunklin County, Missouri, to J.H. Riggs Jr. and Lillian Luveda Wilson, both of whom proceeded him in death.
Jay married his beautiful bride, Denise Hanlon, in September 1965. They were able to celebrate 50 loving years of marriage before Denise (Dee) passed away in May of this year.
Jay earned a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Wayne State University in Michigan. He was hired at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in 1968, as one of the founding members of the Psychology department there. He retired from EKU in 1998.
He is remembered by students and faculty as an extremely kind, funny, smart mentor and teacher. He would go out of his way to let you know if you were doing well, or if he thought you needed help. His door was always open to offer that help too. He generously supported EKU both financially and through time and energy.
He is lovingly remembered by his family and friends and will be truly missed. Along with his mother, father and loving wife Dee, he is pre-deceased by his brother-in-law Lawrence Hanlon.
He is survived by and greatly missed by: his sister-in-law Connie Hanlon, his nephew Scott Hanlon (Marlena) and family; niece Kelly Gaydos (Michael) and family; smf niece Dawn Riggs (Kristopher) and family. Also, Myron and Lisa Guyton and family who were students at EKU and Jay and Dee took them into their home, mentored them, and made them their honorary children.
There will be a memorial service at a later date to be announced.
Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
