John Leonard Flanagan, Jr. John Leonard Flanagan Jr. husband of Dianna Herndon Flanagan passed away Thursday, November 22, 2018 peacefully at home. He was born May 5, 1941 in Los Angeles, California. The son of John Leonard Flanagan Sr. and Margaret Heil Flanagan of Manhattan Beach, California. He served a four year tour in the Air Force. John is a graduate of the University of Minnesota BA, University of Texas MA, and University of Missouri PhD. John is retired from Eastern Kentucky University (1976-2011), serving as Associate Dean for Nontraditional Studies, a member of the Psychology Department and numerous terms on the Faculty Senate.

He served as chairman of Kentucky Council on Higher Education Telecommunications consortium, chairman of the Deans and Directors of Continuing Education in Kentucky, national board member and secretary of Region 3 of The National University Continuing Education Association.

John was founder and first chairman of the Madison County Community Foundation, chairman of the United Way Fund Drive, two-term President of the United Way of Madison County, Board member of the United Way of the Bluegrass, board member of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, member of City of Richmond Recycling Task Force, member of the Richmond Downtown Revitalization Commission, Pops at The Park board member and event chairman, co-chair of the Richmond Arts Gala at Elmwood, board member and Vice President of The Lexington Council of the Arts (Lex Arts) Board of Directors and President of Studio Players-Lexington. John was a christened and confirmed into the American Martyrs Catholic Church, Manhattan Beach, California. He later became a member of First Christian Church, Richmond, KY.

John is survived by his wife of 40 years Dianna, brother, James (Susan), nephew Patrick, niece Marie Flanagan of Fountain Valley, California, sister-in-law Darlene, nephews Ryan & Ethan Flanagan of Port Townsend, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Christopher.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 27, Oldham Roberts and Powell Funeral Home 11:00-1:00; Service 1:00 PM, burial to follow at Richmond Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Dr. Fred Ballou, Richie Cobb, Dr. Lyle Cook, Phil Lynch, Patrick Shackelford.
