Opal (Warren) Smith, of Richmond, died at 2:15 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2017, at Madison Health & Rehab Center after a brief illness.
She was a native of Madison County and a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Transportation. Opal loved gardening, loved people and never met a stranger.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Jo Bowling, and her longtime friend and companion, Ralph Short. She had no children of her own but was blessed with many nieces and nephews: Judy Wells, Tammy (Steve) Ward, Dean (Ginger) Bowling, Michael Bowling, Amy (Ken) Hawkins, Ben Thornton, Fran (Mike) Lowry, Robin Thornton, Dwayne (Paula) Thornton, Debbie Dunk, and David Warren. ?She was preceded in death by: her husband, James W. Smith; father, Johnie Warren; stepmother, Vandelia (Dee) Warren; mother, Minnie Francis Tevis; stepfather, Cecil Tevis; brothers, Orville and Dalmus (Peanut) Warren; beloved sister, Kathleen (Kathy) Thornton; and beloved niece, Linda Gail Weaver.
Funeral service 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home. Burial will be the following week at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.? In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choice in Opal's memory.
