Shirley's Story

Shirley Park Deane, 80, of Richmond, passed away after a long illness on October 20, 2016. She was born in 1936. She is survived by her two sons, Richard P Deane of New York and Roger M Deane of Atlanta, her four grandchildren, and her brother, Dr. George Park of Lexington.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Smith Park and Nancy Richardson Park of Richmond, and her husband, Daniel Richard Deane of Richmond.
Mrs. Deane graduated from Model Training School and went on to study at the University of Kentucky, obtaining both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Library Science. While at UK, she was honored with the Phi Beta Kappa award and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After graduation, she was employed by UK, helping to develop the new medical library there. Mrs. Deane was later employed by EKU, first as a freshman English instructor then later as a member of the College of Education as a professor of Library Science.
Mrs. Deane nurtured a lifelong love of music, first as a young girl studying piano and voice and later as a member of the Model orchestra in high school. She attended the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp each summer from 1950-1954. She was also a member of Model's Glee Club and shared the Valedictorian Cup there upon her graduation.
After finishing her education at UK, Mrs. Deane returned to Richmond and sang in the First Christian Church choir and was invited to join the Richmond Cecilian Club. Her tenure in both organizations lasted more than 50 years. Her work as Cecilian Club fundraiser for Foster Music Camp provided scholarship funds for needy young musicians there for more than 20 seasons.
Mrs. Deane was also very active in the Kentucky Federation of Music Clubs where she served as Secretary and as President for two terms. She was a founding member of the Richmond Choral Society and served that organization as librarian and singer for the entire length of its existence.
Mrs. Deane continued to stay involved with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She served in many volunteer positions at the sorority including Facility Corporation President, Recruitment Reference Board Chairman, State Chairman, Facility Corporation Treasurer, Finance Advisor and Advisory Board Chairman.
Mrs. Deane followed her father and mother in her love of farming and managed their family farm in Lincoln County for many years.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp at EKU.
Visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home in Richmond on Friday, November 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Richmond Cemetery on Saturday, November 5. at 11 a.m.
