Tulley's Story

Tulley Crayton Cormney, 92, 0f Richmond, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Richmond Health & Rehab. He was born March 14, 1925 to Ben Gatewood Cormney and Mary Belle Dalton Cormney in Garrard County, Kentucky. He was the widower of Kathryn Smith Cormney to whom he was married 56 years before her passing in 1999.
Tulley grew up on the family farm in Garrard County. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and was trained to be an aviation cadet. After his discharge from the Air Force, he and Kathryn worked for his brother, Kilbern, in the hotel and restaurant business for several years.
In 1950, Tulley began the career he loved, at Bluegrass Hardware and Bluegrass Plumbing, working with his brother, Huston, and their father who started the business. In 1981, Bluegrass Hardware and Bluegrass Plumbing separated, with Tulley becoming sole owner and manager of the hardware store then located at Richmond Plaza Shopping Center. It would become Bluegrass Ace Hardware before moving to its final location at University Shopping Center in 1998, where Tulley continued to work until he retired in 2001. His son, Larry, operated the business until they sold it in 2009. Throughout his 51 years in the hardware business, Tulley did his best to serve the people of Madison County with integrity and fairness. He appreciated his customers and his employees, and was grateful for every day he worked at Bluegrass Hardware.
Tulley was a longtime member of First Christian Church and the Turley Bible Class.
Besides his wife and parents, Tulley was predeceased by: four siblings- brothers Kilbern, Bill and Huston Cormney and sister Voreese C. Akin; nephews Ronnie, Jimmy, Laney, and Ryan Cormney; and friend Steve Griggs.
Survivors include: his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carla Cormney; granddaughter and her husband, Megan and Andy Davis; great-grandsons, Wyatt and Elijah Davis; sister-in-law, Pearl Carpenter; dear, special friend, Ann Kidder; several nieces and nephews; and friend, Bryan Needham.
Visitation for Mr. Cormney will be Wednesday, March 14, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. at First Christian Church. Funeral services wil be held Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the church, officiated by Rev. Mark Condrey. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Allan Cormney, Ben Cormney, Sam Yater, Jim Crouch, Bill Earnest, and Jeff Earnest. Honorary bearers will be members of the Turley Bible Class and his friends from the McDonalds Breakfast Club.
