William Ernest Slone, 88, beloved husband for 66 years to Lois Jones Slone, went home to be with the Lord on October 13, 2017. William was born on October 18, 1928, in Ashland, KY. to Ernest J. Slone and Josephine Smith Slone, the first of five children. He had unlimited curiosity about the world around him and many interests, constantly studying and reading throughout his life. Bill graduated early from high school and obtained his degree in Radio and Television from the University of Kentucky, where he developed life-long friends in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. His first job out of college was to manage a radio station in Campbellsville, KY. There he met the love of his life, Lois, who had a show on a competing radio station. They met in November and married on January 16, 1951. Bill was called to serve his country in the United States Army, Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) during the Korean War. Once discharged honorably, Bill went to work in the family business, MRS Market, which came to be known as Slone's Foodtown. In 1968, Bill and Lois became owners and operators of Slones Inc., a women's clothing store in Berea, Ky. Their business lasted 40 years until their retirement in 2008, and brought them many customers from all over the U.S. who became treasured friends. Bill's priorities in life were God, Country, and Family. He faithfully served First Christian Church in Lexington and in Berea, Ky. His callings included that of Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Board, home communion, and choir member. Bill dearly loved golf, photography, and travel- especially to Vero Beach, Florida and Scotland. He is survived by the lights of his life: wife Lois; daughter Sandra Slone Coleman (Stephen) of Lexington, Ky.; grandchildren Kelly Slone Pratt (Stephanie) of Portland, Oregon; Sara Pratt Peacock (John) of Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina; Caroline Campbell Coleman, Lexington, Ky; and great-grandchildren Josephine Epa Pratt and Wells Pratt Peacock. Bill is also survived by his siblings: Vivian Slone Gambill (June, deceased); Donald Slone (Marie); Robert Slone (Mary Ellen); and James Slone (Phyllis); along with nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins whom he dearly loved. To Lois he will continue to be her rock; to Sandra he will always be her hero; and to his grandchildren he will remain "Bull"- ever ready to play, laugh, eat ice cream, and have a good time. Funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Kerr Brothers on Harrodsburg Road on Wednesday October 18, Bill's 89th birthday. Visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with service immediately following. Burial ceremony will take place at Camp Nelson Cemetery in Nicholasville, Ky.
