Bernice's Story

Text size

Bernice Thomas, the widow of Ronald V. Thomas, died peacefully at home on August 18, 2017.

She was born in Kingsmill, Ohio, the daughter of Agnes Hogan and Hubert Bailey. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings Eunice and Ed Johnson, Phyllis and Delbert Picket, James and Bonnie Bailey and nephews, Thomas Snapp, Ronnie Picket and David Bailey.

She is survived by her children, Ronnie and April Thomas, Marie and Sammy McIntosh, and Sue Ann and Bobby Herbst; grandchildren, Andy Thomas, Jennifer McIntosh, Joey Herbst, Ben Herbst, Phillip Herbst, Billy Herbst, Will McIntosh, and 13 great-grandchildren; nieces, June Gail Ingram, Sharon Bradley, Sheryle Picket, Linda Snapp, and nephews, Dale, Jim and Bobby Bailey and their families who loved their Aunt Bea.

She also leaves to mourn members of the Thomas family who loved her dearly: Russell and Betty Thomas & family, Rose and Bill Venable & family, Rita Moody, Dan & family; as well as the families of the late Ruby Winkler, Ruth Agee, R.W. Thomas, Roy Thomas and Rina Ambrose.

Moving to Richmond in the late 50s, Bernice worked at Pats coffee shop, The Sweet Shop, Newberrys, H K Porter, Southern Dollar, and Begley Drug Company. She retired from the Madison County Clerks office, where she served as Deputy Clerk for 20 years.

She loved to raise a garden and took great pride in her yard. In retirement, she enjoyed selling antiques at her shop, The Gabby Place, as well as having a booth at Loose Leaf and Athens School House Antiques.

Her loved ones will fondly remember her joy of having a ripe tomato by the Fourth of July, her love of half runner green beans and Grannys fried chicken, simply the best! With her easy smile and gorgeous white hair, family, friends and even strangers benefitted from her willingness to always help those in need, especially those down on their luck. She was of the Church of God faith and was indeed a faithful and loyal servant who is, no doubt, reaping her rewards in Heaven.

Visitation will be from 5 7 PM Tuesday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. The family will have a private graveside service and burial in the Richmond Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers from Family Choice Home Care and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice Care Plus, 208 Kidd Drive, Berea, KY 40403
