Bessie's Story

Bessie Golden Sowers, 93, of Union City, the widow of Carroll Sowers, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2017, at Baptist Health - Richmond.
Bessie Golden was born, April 22, 1923, on the family farm at Union City to Elmer and Lizzie Parks Golden, both of whom preceded her in death. Bessie grew up in the Union City area and attending Runyon Grove and Union City Schools before graduating from Madison Central High School in 1941. In 1945, Bessie met the love of her life, Carroll Sowers, and entered into a marriage that was to last over 68 years until Carroll's death in 2014.
Bessie was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 70 years, serving many years as a Sunday school teacher for the Ladies Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker who also enjoyed people that she met and the friendships that she made while at various times working at the Hi-Dollar Warehouse, Mickey's Fabrics, Singer Sewing Co., Begley Drug Co. and Ward's Sewing Center.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bessie was preceded in death by :her older brother, Melvin Kay Golden; her baby sister, Lois Golden; and her beloved son-in-law, Charles "Chogie" Tussey.
Left to celebrate Bessie's life are: her son, Jerry Sowers of Union City; her daughter, Janie Sowers Tussey of Labadie, Missouri; two grandsons, Thomas Tussey (Retta Leritz, fiancée) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Tyler Tussey of O'Fallon, Missouri.
She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Brynn, Austin, Logan and Lola Tussey, all of Missouri.
Service for Bessie will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, with Bro. Bobby Greene officiating. Burial will follow at the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Danny Noland, Kyle Sowers, Jim Emerson, Gene Reed, Tom Tussey and Tyler Tussey.
The family greatly acknowledges the many years of exemplary service provided to Bessie by Dr. John Gillespie and Dr. Marshall Ney.
