Charles's Story

Dr. Charles Hugh Gibson, Jr. 89, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Telford Terrace.
He was born in Madison County on July 17, 1927, to Charles Hugh Gibson, Sr., and Emma Margaret Davison Gibson, both of whom preceded him in death. Dr. Gibson was former Dean of the Graduate School at Eastern Kentucky University, a U.S. Navy Pilot, and a retired U.S. Navy Commander. He was a devout member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Richmond.
Dr. Gibson enjoyed gardening, travel, golf, and woodworking.  He was a member of the Eastern Kentucky University Colonel Club and was an avid follower of EKU sports. He had served on many boards including the Pattie A. Clay Hospital Board of Directors, First Federal Savings Bank and the Madison County Country Club.  He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and sharing good times with his friends.
Survivors include: his loving wife, Shirley Ann Carson Gibson of Richmond; two daughters, Margaret Gibson, Becky Gibson Wells (Richa), both of Richmond; one son, Charles H. "Chuck" Gibson III of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren, Benjamin Baxter, Lauren Baxter Smalley, Miranda W. Moore, Davis Wells, Charles Hugh "Chad" Gibson IV; and three great-grandchildren, Cameron Dyan Baxter, Barrett Steven Smalley, and Colton David Moore.
He was truly grateful for the love and compassion from his dedicated care givers, Susan Greater, Brenda Duerson, Jennifer McKinney and Bernice Abrams, during his later years.
Funeral service for Dr. Gibson will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 3, 2016, at the First Christian Church of Richmond, with Rev. Mark Condrey and Dr. Glenn Birkett officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at the church. Pallbearers will be Chad Gibson, Ben Baxter, Davis Wells, Brandon Smalley, David Moore and Richa Wells. Honorary bearers will be Jim Cox, David Rush, Jim Harris, Ken Tunnell and George Robinson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, Kaden Tower, 6100 Dutchmans Lane , Ste # 401, Louisville, KY 40205-3284.
