Robert's Story

Text size

Robert Scott Hurlburt, age 53, passed from this life into the next on December 1, 2016, after a two-year courageous battle with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Temporal Dementia.
He was born on November 7, 1963, in Stuggart, Germany, to a military dad, William Robert Hurlburt, and mother, Karin Meurer Hurlburt. His early years were spent in New York, New Jersey and Canada, but his family eventually made Louisville their home and thus resulted in Scott becoming a huge Louisville Cardinal fan.
Scott graduated from EKU, married his high school sweetheart, Terri Jeffries, and started a teaching career in Northern Kentucky in 1986. His teaching career spanned 27 years and spread from Northern Kentucky to Paris, Bourbon, Madison and Fayette Counties. His students say he was an inspiration, always making class fun and full of laughter, and his love for his students was always evident. This was also evident from the community as shown when he was awarded the Campbellsville University Teacher of the Year Award for Excellence in Teaching.
In addition to teaching, Scott ran his own tent rental business for 20 years. Locals called him the tent guy. Scott especially loved meeting new people through those business adventures and never met a stranger.
Most weekends and every summer, Scott could be found with family at Grider Hill Marina on Lake Cumberland, a place he called his 2nd home since the age of 4 years old. He loved the lake, and it was beyond doubt his favorite place on this earth.
Scott is preceded in death by his mother, Karin Meurer Hurlburt, and a wife, Terri Jeffries Hurlburt. Survivors include: his wife, Marlene Daugherty Hurlburt of Richmond; his father, William Robert Hurlburt and wife Carolyn Hurlburt of Bluffton, South Carolina: a sister, Robin Hurlburt Neal and husband Tom; niece Claire Neal Horn and nephew Ryan Neal, all of Bluffton, South Carolina; his daughter, Ashley Hurlburt Fothergill, son-in-law, Joey Fothergill and granddaughter, Aria Rose Fothergill of Berea, Kentucky; 2 children Cali and Trenton Hurlburt of Lawrenceburg; 3 step-children Eben, Ariel and Ian Norvell of Richmond.
Visitation will be held at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home of Richmond on Saturday, December 3, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. Graveside service will be at Bethany Cemetery in Louisville on Monday, December 5, 2016, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Bob Cooper officiating. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home of Richmond is in charge of arrangements.
