Retired Associate Professor of Elementary Education Dies
Mrs. Hayes Heil taught 26 years at Eastern; retired in 1992
Susie Hayes Heil,a retired elementary teacher of Model Laboratory School, Eastern Kentucky University, died Friday, September 15, at the Wabash Christian Village in Carmi, Illinois. She was married to Glenn W. Hayes from May 1, 1955 until his death on April 9, 1996. She married Wayne Heil on September 25, 1999.
A native of White County, Illinois, she was a member of the Centerville Primitive Baptist Church and of the Skillet Fork Church Association.
Hayes Heil received her B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Illinois. She retired as an Associate Professor of Elementary Education while at Eastern Kentucky University.
She was active in 4-H her entire life, from participating as a youth, through serving in volunteer and leadership roles at the local, area and state levels.
Susie was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Society of Education and a member of Phi Delta Kappa professional organization for educators. She was involved in several state math education programs, serving as president of the Kentucky Council of Teachers for Mathematics, and later continuing as a private consultant to promote math education reform in Kentucky.
Hayes Heil is survived by her husband, Wayne; son, Thomas William Hayes; daughter, Deborah Turner; brother, John Allen Hodgson; sister, Ann Lepinski; two stepsons, Dennis Heil and Doug Heil; stepdaughter, Rhonda Fearday; three grandchildren, Jessica, Christine, and Julia Turner and several step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Mary Helen (Ridenour) Hodgson and a brother William Joseph Hodgson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, Illinois.
The family requests memorial contributions be made in Susie's memory to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation or to the J. Lester and Nancy Miller Scholarship Fund of the EKU Agriculture Department.
