Bertie William "Jack" Ditmer, 92, of Wilmore, formerly of Waco, passed away Friday, December 6, 2019 at the Thomson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.
Born November 17, 1927, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the son of Herbert and Fairy Blackwell Ditmer, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jolene Smith Ditmer, a grandson, Brock Roseberry, and a sister, Mae Schwier.
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 17, 1944 and served his boot camp duties at Parris Island, SC. He was sent to serve in Guam and attached to the 3rd Marine Division, on April 14, 1945. He participated in the occupation of China from December, 1945, to January 5, 1947. Mr. Ditmer was sent home but remained as an active reserve. On September 17, 1950, he was called up for the Korean War and participated in the Wonsen-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign, Northern Korea from November 12, 1950 to December 12, 1950. He participated in operations against enemy forces in South and Central Korea from December 16 to August of 1951. After his discharge in 1952, he joined the reserves in 1955 and finally discharge was issue January 17, 1958.
Mr. Ditmer was the former owner and operator of Blue River Marine in New Castle, Indiana, and a member of the Waco Lodge F & AM # 338, where he served as Past Master. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and a life member of the DAV. Also as a member of the Marine Corps League, he served as Commandant in both the Chattanooga and the Richmond Detachments.
He is survived by: one son, Joseph Edward Ditmer, of Brownsburg, Indiana; one daughter Cindy Roseberry (Terry), of Versailles, KY; five grandchildren, Brett Miles, Eric Roseberry, Jill Roseberry, Scott Roseberry, and Kate Roseberry; two great grandchildren, Jordan & Luke Roseberry; five great-grandchildren, Jordan, Luke, Avery, Zach Roseberry and Sophia Miles
Funeral service for Mr. Ditmer will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, December 9, 2019 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Randy Nation officiating. A private burial will take place in Indiana.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.

Jack was a great guy. We talked several times at the VFW meetings and I once helped him sell poppies at Kroger. A true American hero. He will be sorely missed.
